obama, the white house, congressional democrats, want to go over the fiscal cliff because they believe that it is more politically advantageous for them to do so. is that a sentiment you agree with or not? >> i believe that the president and the democrats see a political victory at the bottom of the fiscal cliff. i see financial problems for our country at the bottom of the fiscal cliff with unemployment over 9%, and another recession. i think -- i want to find a solution working with people on both sides of the aisle but when you have howard dean, the former chairman of the democratic national committee, you have patty murray, who ran the democratic senatorial committee encouraging going over the cliff i think it's irresponsible. i think we ought to have the president sitting down with john boehner, finding solutions that can, one, pass the house, and, two, be signed by the president, and i believe if you find that solution, it will pass the senate. >> senator john barrasso, thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> next on "andrea mitchell reports" -- as the house heads home, are dem

players, president obama and house speaker john boehner. joining me for our daily fix, nbc's david gregory moderator of "meet the press" and chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. david, you've been on the hill talking to a lot of people. what is your sense? we hear john boehner saying no progress. >> right. >> is this all just a lot of shadow boxing right now? >> i think it's a lot of shadow boxing. i've gotten a clear impression of is that republicans are in a position to give on tax rates, if, and i keep underlining a big if, if they can get the white house to deal on entitlements. they have to get something for their members. enough public sentiment saying give up on the tax breaks to get a bigger deal. the president could muscle through the tax rates on his own. risks on his side. why not force him into a position where they can get sort of a bigger deal. here's what i thought was important. republicans saying to me that, you know, last july when we had the debt debacle, the feeling was don't give the president a success, don't give him a big victor

said just a few days after the election from november. >> we just had an election where president obama ran on that. we increased our majority in the senate with democratic candidates who said that to solve this problem the wealthiest americans have to pay their fair share, too. so -- if the republicans will not agree with that, we will reach a point at the end of the year where all of the tax cuts expire and we will start over next year and whatever we do will be a tax cut for whatever package we put together. >> when senator murray first said that there is a lot of -- anger on the gop saying she's willing to take us over the fiscal cliff. even some democrats said it was too early to have that mindset. but it seems to be that's what a lot of democrats would now like to see so they can get the 250 number or bell go they certainly don't see the harm necessarily in this happening. or at least the downside doesn't necessarily -- outweigh the positives which is, as you described is the tax cut on the wealthiest earners at a certain threshold. i think that will is a difference between the tw

history, the first two years of the last obama administration congress and the senate and the white house were all in the hands of the democrats, and they did nothing, so spare me that it's only the democrats. >> perhaps the mayor is forgetting that you need 60 votes in the senate to get anything done, but be that as it may, his point is well taken. we all have a responsibility now to go forward to get something done, and it should be bipartisan, and i think it can be. whatever the president can do by executive or administrative direction, high pressure that he will do. i also think we all have a responsibility to tell the children that we did everything in our power to protect them, and i think this is different. for some reason it's different. children die all the time in ener cities and the rest. it's always tragic. somehow or other this has pushed it all over the top, and i think that people will not be satisfied until this is accomplished and i'm very encouraged by what i'm hearing from those that have not necessarily been leaders on the gun safety issue before. >> what one of the is
